YESTERDAY, WE HAD a few questions about spice bags, a curious dish that Irish patrons of Chinese takeaways hold very dear.
A spice bag contains crispy chicken or chicken balls, chips, and a blend of salt and spices, all shaken up in one bag.
Spice bags seem to be particularly popular in Dublin, but can sometimes be found in other parts of the country.
After our serious investigation of the spice bag phenomenon was published, several readers wanted to know where they would be able to procure one. Well, here it is.
New World Chinese in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow
The place that started it all, according to one reader:
Dosun on Dorset Street, Dublin
We hear it’s best to get this spice bag with satay sauce. Amazing call.
The Food Inn, Ballyfermot
This one comes highly recommended from our reader Ricky C, who endorsed The Food Inn in no uncertain terms.
Further investigation revealed not one but five different types of spice bags:
Eighty Seven Chinese, Summerhill, Dublin
Eighty Seven is a favourite of one TheJournal.ie staffer, who says the amount of “sinful food” in the one place is “a little overwhelming”.
Sounds perfect.
Lin Kee North Strand, Dublin
Lin Kee’s spice bag was introduced “due to popular demand” and contains “healthy vegetables”, so you don’t need to feel too bad about getting one.
Gorgeous Food, Fairview, Dublin
Gorgeous Food has a whole section devoted to spice bags, including a ‘jumbo’ that we’re particularly interested in:
Chop Chop, Upper Clanbrassil Street, Dublin
One Twitter review of Chop Chop advises people to avoid touching their eyes after eating the spice bag. IT’S THAT SPICY.
Sunflower, Templeogue, Dublin
This one gets glowing reviews from our friends at Boards.ie.
Golden House, Trim, Co Meath
The Golden House comes recommended from reader Louise Flattery.
UPDATE: Our lovely readers have given us a few spice bag leads, including spots in Dundalk and Dunboyne.
